iPad: Whats inside and who makes it:

  • iPad overall:  Contract MFG:  Hon Hai Precision Co.* Revenue:  $499 Cost: $260 in components.
  • A4 processor:  ARM reference designs. Apple purchased fabless chip designer P.A. Semi for $278 million in Apr, 2008, Processor includes Cortex-A9 MPCore (identical to the processor in the nVidia Tegra and Qualcomm Snapdragon), a ARM Mali 50-series GPU, and a memory controller all on one die.  Running speed 1GHz.  MFG:  Samsung.
  • Display:  LG Display, AUO backup*  IPS, or in-plane-switching LCD technology developed by Hitachi in 1996LCD screen with IPS technology estimated at $95.
